How do I give clear directions?

Last Updated: Jan 20, 2017

Reaching your place without any difficulty will make a good first impression for your guests. So provide as much details as possible.

Provide the simplest route
Your guests may not be familiar with your city so please provide the simplest direction to your place. Avoid using routes with a lot of turns as this may be confusing for your guests. E.g. “On Orchard Road, make a right on Orchard Link then make another right turn on Orchard Blvd.”
Specify the distance
Here are a few ways to describe distances:
The number of blocks or streets your guests will need to pass. This works perfectly for cities. E.g. Along Victoria Street, make a left turn on Middle Road and keep going for 3 blocks until you reach Bencoolen Street.

The number of traffic lights your guests will need to pass but you must be right about the number. E.g. You will be passing through 2 traffic lights before turning left to Rochor Road.

Give distance in miles or kilometers. E.g. Go 3 miles (5 kilometers) along Nicoll Highway then make a right turn on Battery Rd.

Provide hints on the timing. This is the perfect way to tell your guests how much time it will take to get to a place. We recommend you to provide the timing for short path only though. E.g. It should take you 20- minutes’ drive along Nicoll Highway before you reach Esplanade Drive.

Provide landmarks to give them some indications when they are close to your place or when they have gone too far and have missed their turn. E.g. Along North Bridge Road, make a right turn to Middle Road next to the National Library Building.

Warn your guests if there is any confusing route
If there is any small or hidden road, you should mention that. If there's a turn that you know people tend to miss, tell your guests so they will know they've gone too far.
